Mulanje Mountain is a fascinating spiritual landscape for which World Heritage status is currently pursued. The mountain is inhabited by Batwa spirits and the mythical snake Napolo. Presentday communities around the mountain are well aware of the taboos that need to be observed in order to keep the spirits appeased. Transgression may lead to people's disappearance or large mudslides such as the one that wraught major havoc in 1991 in Phalombe. The veneration of mountain spirits goes back centuries as our archaeological work has demonstrated.
Our tailor made trip can take you to ancient sacrificial sites and sacred pools as well as early colonial sites such as Fort Lister, the Chief Nkhanda graves, and Mt. Zion mission. Our Mulanje tour, based on years of research, was aired on CNN Inside Africa. Watch it here to get a flavour!
